Mining
Open-pit mining is done by drilling through solid rock formations, which create high-frequency vibrations. These vibrations can damage the drill mast and drive motor. While there was some vertical cushioning employed, it was not substantial. Utex increased the size of the dampener to provide an increased vertical cushion as well as developing radial stress relief. By cushioning radially, the Utex King Cobra Rotary Shock Sub Series can significantly reduce the accelerations induced at the drill head. It’s compact, durable and improves the penetration rate.
Other benefits:
- Quick field repairs requiring no welding or grinding
- Harden impact face for increased longevity of sub life
- Cuts cost of downtime
- Oil resistant element
- Replaceable lugs provided with rebuild kits
- King Cobra comes in (4) sizes – 28”, 22”, 18” and 14”.

Shock Subs
Shock subs are blast hole drilling tools engineered to absorb the vibrational impact of surface mining. By protecting the drive heads and mast from the damage caused by axial and torsional shock vibration, the shock sub prolongs the life of drill components, improving the run length and keeping downtime to a minimum. It also holds the drill bit in place, allowing a better penetration rate while protecting the expensive motor from bounce-out damage. All of this translates into a lower drilling cost per foot and a more productive operation.
